I found some old sketchbooks while I was unpacking boxes a few weeks ago, including some of the very early sketches for what would eventually become Terminal Hipster. I thought it might be fun to share some of them here on the site, and I’ll add more stuff to this section as I keep doing new strips. Some of these are going to be really rough, but I think that’s a good thing… if I didn’t think I had improved at all, I would probably hang myself with an extension cord in the library stairwell. The first Terminal Hipster drawings I did were scribbled in the summer and fall of 2004, so I’ve spent a few years drawing these kids already.

God, I’m embarrassed to post this… but that right there, in a totally unrecognizable form, is the first ever Terminal Hipster drawing. I don’t know what I was going for with that one, or why i saw it and thought it was an idea I had to develop, but there you go. I think that’s a car in the corner, for some reason. There’s no date on this page in my notebook, but a few pages after it there’s something dated for 14 Sept 2004, so this must’ve been just a few days or so before that.

The second ever drawing of Jason!

The first drawing I ever did of Chester, when he was going to have brown hair and no real identity other than “The Coffee Idiot.” His whole shtick was that he’d show up and annoy the hell out of Liz at the coffee shop. I don’t know exactly when he made the shift from casual annoyance to core cast member in my mind, but by the second time I drew him he had blond hair and a proper name. This one would’ve been late fall, 2003.
Here’s some newer stuff. Not from any sketchbooks, really… these days a lot of my sketching is done on little notepads at work.
